Warehouses and industrial buildings in Orange County present a different security problem than a restaurant or professional office. The floor plates are larger. There are more entry points — a dozen dock doors across a 100,000 SF distribution facility is not unusual, and each one is a vehicle and personnel access point. The employee headcount can swing between shifts. And the value density per square foot is often low until it is suddenly very high — a building that ships consumer electronics, pharmaceutical supplies, or high-end goods has real exposure on dock day.

The conversation around technology for industrial properties is worth having precisely because these buildings are often the last category to get a properly designed system. Office buildings and retail spaces tend to get addressed first because they are more visible and the owners are more directly present. Warehouses and distribution centers get addressed after something surfaces a gap that was already there.

Camera placement at scale

The core challenge with camera coverage in an industrial building is coverage scale. A 60,000 SF warehouse requires a different approach than a 2,000 SF retail suite. There are more angles to cover, more distance between cameras and the events they are meant to document, and more entry points than a single camera field of view can handle.

What a properly designed industrial camera system prioritizes:

  • Every dock door. Each dock is a vehicle entry point, a loading event, and a personnel access point. Coverage of the interior dock approach, the dock door itself, and the truck positioned at the door gives a full sequence of any given delivery or outbound shipment.
  • The parking lot and perimeter. Employee vehicles, contractor trucks, and delivery carriers all arrive in the same lot. Camera positions that cover the vehicle entry and parking areas give you a head count and a vehicle record without putting a person at the gate.
  • Interior high-value zones. If part of the floor handles higher-value inventory — a cage, a staging area, a receiving dock for a specific product line — that area gets its own dedicated coverage.
  • Side doors and emergency exits on the building perimeter. These are the access points camera coverage skips most often, and that gap is the one that tends to matter.

The camera count in a mid-size warehouse typically runs 12-20 units for a building with four to six dock doors and a standard lot. Larger distribution operations scale proportionally. A distribution center or manufacturing facility processing 20-40 truck visits per day has a real logistics problem hidden inside the access question: who was here, at what time, and when did they leave.

What LPR adds at an industrial dock:

  • A timestamped entry and exit record for every vehicle that uses the dock approach, created automatically
  • The ability to compare that record against scheduled carrier visits without paper sign-in sheets
  • An alert when an unregistered vehicle enters the dock area outside of scheduled hours
  • A searchable log that answers specific questions — whether a particular carrier was on-site on a given day and how long they stayed — without pulling full video for the entire shift

Physical gating at a dock entrance combined with LPR means the gate opens automatically for recognized carriers and holds for unrecognized vehicles, with an alert going to whoever manages receiving. The credential management challenge in a warehouse or industrial building is different from an office. The mix of people coming and going typically includes:

  • A core employee population working regular or rotating shifts
  • Temporary labor, particularly in distribution and light manufacturing
  • Carriers and delivery services with their own dock access needs
  • Cleaning contractors and maintenance vendors who come in during or after hours
  • Dock supervisors and loading crew whose access windows differ from office or admin staff

Managing that mix with physical keys creates gaps over time. Someone who stopped working for a staffing agency months ago may still hold a key to a side door no one thought to recollect. A carrier that used to service the account has a fob they were issued and never returned. A maintenance company was given after-hours access for a one-time service call and was never removed from anything.

  • Regular employees get building access matching their actual shift schedule, nothing outside it
  • Temporary labor gets day-specific credentials that expire automatically at shift end

  • Uses ceiling-mounted or high-wall access points on a commercial platform rather than consumer gear rated for a fraction of the square footage
  • Separates handheld and scanner traffic from office workstation traffic and from any guest or visitor WiFi
  • Keeps the camera and access reader network isolated from tenant IT traffic — building systems on their own segment, not competing with inventory management software
